The short version. Bonsai is a free, personal project, provided as is. You may use it; you may not redistribute or reverse engineer it. It comes with no warranty, no guarantee of accuracy, and no obligation on our part to support it or keep it available. Verify anything important against its original source.
These terms govern your use of the Bonsai — JSON Tree Viewer browser extension and this website (together, "Bonsai"). By installing or using Bonsai you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not install or use it — and if you have already installed it, remove it from your browser.
Bonsai is a personal, non-commercial project published by an individual developer ("we", "us"). It is provided free of charge. No fee is or has ever been charged for it, and these terms reflect that.
Bonsai is proprietary software. Its source code is not published, and no rights in it are granted to you except those stated here. Subject to these terms, you are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Bonsai in your own browser, for your own purposes, in the form in which it is distributed.

All rights not expressly granted are reserved. This licence ends automatically if you breach these terms; you may end it at any time by uninstalling the extension.
Bonsai bundles open-source components, each governed by its own licence rather than by section 2 of these terms. They are listed in full, with their licence texts, inside the extension under Settings → "Open-source licenses". Nothing in these terms restricts your rights in those components under their own licences.
Bonsai is a read-only viewer. It renders JSON, JSONC and JSON Lines / NDJSON documents for inspection. It does not edit, transform, validate or store your documents, and it does not transmit them anywhere.
It is a convenience tool, not a source of truth. Software has bugs, and Bonsai is no exception: parsing, formatting, searching, copying or displaying a document may in some circumstance produce an incorrect or incomplete result. You are responsible for verifying any data against its authoritative source before relying on it — especially for any decision with financial, legal, operational or safety consequences. Bonsai must not be used as the sole basis for such decisions, and is neither built nor tested for safety-critical or otherwise high-risk systems.
Bonsai is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty or representation of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, whether express, implied or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement.
In particular, we do not warrant that Bonsai will be error-free, uninterrupted, secure, compatible with any given document, browser version or system, or that its output will be accurate or complete.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, nor for any loss of profit, revenue, business, contracts, goodwill, opportunity, anticipated savings, data or data accuracy, however caused and on any theory of liability, arising out of or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, Bonsai.
Bonsai is supplied free of charge and without any commercial relationship between us. That is a material condition of it being made available at all: absent this allocation of risk, it would not be published.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, and if you use Bonsai as a consumer, your mandatory statutory rights are unaffected by these terms.
Bonsai is offered without any support commitment. We are under no obligation to provide assistance, respond to enquiries, fix defects, issue updates, maintain compatibility with future browser versions, or keep Bonsai available.
We may modify, suspend, discontinue or withdraw Bonsai at any time, in whole or in part, including by unpublishing it from the Chrome Web Store, without notice and without liability to you. An installed copy that is no longer maintained remains yours to use or remove as you see fit.
Bonsai collects no data. Everything it does happens locally in your browser; the only thing it stores is your own settings, held by Chrome. See the privacy policy for the full statement.
Bonsai is distributed through the Chrome Web Store, and your installation and use of it are also subject to Google's own terms and policies. Bonsai is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google or any other company whose products it may be used alongside.
We may update these terms; the current version is always the one posted at this address, with its effective date shown above. Material changes take effect for you when you next use Bonsai after they are posted. If you do not accept a revised version, stop using Bonsai and uninstall it.
These terms, and any dispute arising out of or in connection with them or with Bonsai, are governed by the laws of Italy, where the developer resides, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules. If you use Bonsai as a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of your own country of residence.
If any provision of these terms is held invalid or unenforceable, it shall be limited or severed to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions stay in full effect.
